Okay, I'll just say it – I didn't want to pay full price for this mat. And I didn't because it was half price during Amazon days. I actually think that all the truly commercial quality exercise mats are too expensive. I've used sooo many of them in gyms across the country (I travel for business) but I do like the SPRI branded mats because they seem to consistently hold up to heavy use. They don't stretch or tear easily, the foam is dense enough that they don't need to be too thick to offer great cushioning, they are easily cleaned AND they come in a 72 inch length.
Now for this mat: I needed the 72 inch length, as I'm 5ft 10in and for yoga needed the real estate. It does come in both a thicker and shorter option, but the 3/8 inch (about as thick as an iPhone) is perfect because it provides great isolation from the floor for my aging (69 yo) body, it doesn't stretch, but it isn't squishy so that eagle or tree poses feel nearly as stable as if doing them on a hard floor. Okay, big positive here – the mat did NOT have a chemically smell to it when new. So many complain about some mats having obnoxious odor I was concerned this would, but it did not. At all. I can be up close and personal like in baby cobra or childs and can't even smell it. Lastly, it came rolled tightly up, but unrolled easily without lots of memory. The hanging grommets are a nice feature, which I don't use. It's heavier than some, and certainly heavier than any true yoga mat. I can't see this as ever slipping on a floor unless the floor is really dirty and dusty, but nothing sticks to those floors.
So. Now that I own this mat, would I pay full price? Yes and no. Since it should last and last and last, that full price will be amortized over a long time so I might have talked myself into it. If you buy a less resilient mat and then have to repurchase, you've bought this one already.
Suggestion: if you don't want to buy this mat now, put it in your shopping cart, save it for later, and watch the price. That's how I caught the sale.
