Ring’s Familiar Faces feature is a new way to see who’s at your door

Ring is taking a meaningful step toward more contextual smart home alerts with the launch of Familiar Faces.

Now rolling out to select users in the UK, this new feature tells you exactly who’s at your door. The update builds on Ring’s existing motion detection by adding personalised recognition. As a result, it turns generic alerts into something far more useful.

With Familiar Faces enabled, users can receive notifications like “Mum at Front Door” or “Alex at Doorbell”, offering immediate clarity without needing to dive into the live feed. It’s a subtle shift. Nevertheless, it aligns with the broader trend toward more ambient, proactive smart home experiences.

The feature works by detecting faces captured by your Ring doorbell or camera. It allows you to assign names to those individuals. Over time, your system builds a private, personalised directory of up to 50 familiar faces. This covers everyone from family members to regular visitors like dog walkers or babysitters.

Beyond the novelty, Familiar Faces is clearly aimed at solving real-world annoyances. For instance, you can mute notifications for people who come and go frequently like household members. Yet, you will still receive alerts for unknown visitors. That means fewer unnecessary pings and more meaningful updates.

It also adds a layer of passive reassurance. Knowing instantly that your child has arrived home, or that a trusted visitor has stopped by. It will reduce the need for constant checking.

Furthermore, facial recognition in the home inevitably raises privacy concerns. That’s why Ring is leaning heavily into user control here. Familiar Faces is entirely opt-in, and users must manually enable it in the app. Face data is encrypted and tied only to the user’s account, with no sharing beyond that. Additionally, the system prompts users to ensure they have appropriate consent when identifying individuals. This is particularly relevant in regions with stricter data laws.

Meanwhile, to keep things tidy, unnamed faces are automatically deleted after 30 days. This will prevent unnecessary data buildup.

The feature is currently rolling out to compatible 2K, 4K, and select HD Ring devices in the UK. It also requires a Ring subscription tier such as Pro or Pro Intelligence.

As with many of Ring’s newer features, it’s likely this will expand to more regions over time. For now, however, availability remains limited.
