SwitchBot KATA Friends Review

Verdict

The SwitchBot KATA Friends is one of the strangest and most interesting products I’ve tested for a while. It doesn’t really feel like a SwitchBot device, and it certainly doesn’t behave like a conventional toy. It’s expressive, clever, and packed with some seriously impressive technology. It uses cameras, sensors, gesture recognition, facial learning, on-device AI, and robotic navigation to create something that can react to you in a way that feels surprisingly alive.

Unfortunately, it also feels every bit like a first-generation product. It got stuck constantly during my testing, couldn’t reliably navigate back to its charging base, often failed to respond to voice commands, and didn’t always seem to recognize its own name. Add the Companion Care plans into the equation and the price of ownership quickly becomes even more difficult to stomach.

When everything clicks, KATA Friends is genuinely charming and feels like much more than an interactive toy. But with a $700 starting price and the potential for hundreds of dollars more in ongoing costs, I can’t recommend it in its current form.
