Standard absorption of vitamin B12 via the gut relies on several factors that can easily be compromised and are limited to small quantities of B12 at any one time. Absorption is usually reliant on adequate stomach acid to detach B12 from proteins in the diet, and the presence of intrinsic factor (IF) – a binding protein that supports absorption in the intestines. Levels of stomach acid and IF are often reduced by medication, genetic variations, digestive disorders and aging, leading to reduced B12 uptake. Sublingual format bypasses the digestive system, delivering B12 directly to the bloodstream without the reliance on absorption in the gut.*

Active predominantly in blood plasma, methylcobalamin is required to convert folic acid to its active form.
